Getting Outside with Nightingale

Getting Outside with Nightingale
May 28, 2020
As the weather heats up in the Northern hemisphere, many Canadians will want to spend more time outside, whether going to beaches or parks, camping, or just walking instead of driving to run errands. Through these past few months, we have been spending a significant amount of time inside. You may be surprised to find that quarantining can actually be both physically and mentally draining. This is actually now known as "quarantine fatigue". Not knowing when our lives will resume at full speed is stressful. Luckily, it seems like in many provinces, we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel as businesses begin re-opening. Through our blog, we have tackled all things indoors, from organization tips, to meditating, to our favourite books right now. Now we want to give you some tips on how to safely spend your time outdoors. Depending where you live, there may be different restrictions in place. Please consult your local government website to find out what is appropriate for you. Depending on what activities you are doing, there are different ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This blog is meant to give you an overview of the benefits of going outside, and the most common ways to be safe while doing so.

Benefits of Getting Outside

We know that getting exposed to sunshine boosts our levels of Vitamin D, and Vitamin D can boost our immune system. Studies show that breathing fresh air can help you to feel energized and present. Take note of how good the air quality is where you live. If you feel that it is not the best, try to find a forest or park just outside the city that may have cleaner air. Finally, green spaces like parks and forests can help you feel relaxed. Check out our blog on forest bathing for more information.

Grocery Shopping

Try to take as few trips to the store as possible to reduce your risk of exposure; once per week is a good start. If you are a senior or are immunocompromised, most stores have an "early hour" with less people. Many stores also have the option of curbside pickup, where you order your groceries online in advance and then you pick them up when they are ready. Some stores also offer home delivery as an option. Always remember to keep six feet of distance from other shoppers and wash your hands after visiting the store. A face mask may be a good idea as well; click here to check out Nightingale's face covering options.

Going for a Walk

On one hand, we've been told to stay home as much as possible, however there is definitely something to be said about fresh air and exercise. Parks and open spaces are very important for mental health. The best thing to do when getting some fresh air is to stay six feet apart from other people. Try to plan your outing in an area where there won't be a lot of people gathering, and look for large walking paths if possible. Don't be afraid to walk on the grass or cross the street to avoid someone if they do not appear to be trying to distance themselves. This might feel odd or even awkward in normal circumstances. However, as these practices become more common, people will realize that these measures are taken to keep everyone safe. For more information, visit https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52022743
