Tips for choosing a Bra after Breast Surgery

Choosing the right bra after surgery is key to recovery – Find practical tips for choosing the perfect bra after breast surgery, focusing on comfort, support, and recovery!

Bra Selection for Each Phase of Recovery

From the day of surgery to six days post-surgery:

During the first week after surgery, avoid wearing wired bras, as they can cause discomfort and irritate your chest, especially with drains in place.

  • For a Lumpectomy: It’s recommended to wear a wireless bra continuously for the first week or two.
  • For a Mastectomy: You can choose to wear a bra or camisole, unless advised otherwise by your surgical team. Comfort is key, and some may prefer not to wear a bra immediately.
  • Choose bras without underwire and avoid pressure on the surgical site. Consider post-surgery bras that you can easily put on, such as pull-on styles or those with front or back clasps.

Two to Five Weeks Post-Surgery:

During the healing process, your breast drains will be taken out. Afterward, your chest will continue to recover. If you’re still experiencing discomfort or sensitivity, it’s best to avoid returning to normal bras just yet. Many people find comfort in wearing a camisole, surgical bra, or wireless bra during this phase.

Six Weeks Post-Surgery and Beyond:

During this time, your chest may still be sensitive or swollen, so it’s best to wait 6 to 8 weeks after surgery before getting fitted for a new bra.

When getting fitted for a bra:

  • Choose a bra fitter with experience in post-surgery fittings to help you find a comfortable and supportive option.
Ensure the bra is sized to accommodate your larger breast for proper balance and fit.

Bra tips for this phase:

  • Any bra style is suitable for a breast prosthesis as long as it fits comfortably and holds the prosthesis securely.
