Whether you’re a new ostomate, or just looking for some recipe inspiration, this week we wanted to compile a list of tasty and comforting ostomy-friendly recipes.

When it comes to choosing which foods to eat with an ostomy, aim for balance. Make sure you have carbohydrates (like grains, starchy veggies), proteins (lean meats, fish, eggs) and fats (nuts, olive oil, avocado) for energy. Then add in foods containing vitamins and minerals like colourful veggies and fruit to boost your immune system. It’s really important that as well as your diet, you focus on drinking lots of fluids. Staying hydrated is key in keeping your output consistent. Depending on where you are on your stoma journey, whether you’re recovering from surgery or you’ve had a stoma for many years, that will change your food plan. For instance, for 4-6 weeks after surgery, a low fiber diet is common – these foods are easier to digest which will allow your system to rest. There are great resources available to help you plan your meals, such as this one on Ostomy.org. Please consult your doctor to find out what diet is right for you.

These recipes are all healthy and heartwarming – perfect for winter! Disclaimer: these recipes are likely better suited for someone who has had their ostomy for a period of time and understands their personal reactive foods, so that modifications can be made as needed. These recipes are easy to make ahead of time and split into smaller portions, so that if you tend to eat 4-5 smaller meals per day, you can.
