What’s the difference between chemotherapy and radiation? Both are treatments for cancer and have the same goals; they aim to stop cancer from spreading, get rid of cancer cells, and prevent it from returning. However, the treatments themselves are not the same. Here, we wanted to create a simplified comparison of the treatments so that you can easily distinguish between them.

Chemotherapy:

  • uses drugs to shrink or kill cancer cells
  • travels in bloodstream, so the treatment is not localized, but spread through your body
  • can be received through an IV, an injection, or a pill

Radiation Therapy:

  • uses high-energy beams to shrink or kill cancer cells
  • usually a localized treatment aimed at the area of your body with cancer
  • can be received externally or internally

While battling cancer, you may receive radiation, chemotherapy, a combination of both treatments, or neither – there are many options out there and your doctor will create a personalized plan for you. Your treatment will likely be affected by the type and stage of cancer, your age and overall health, and other factors. Ask your doctor if you are unsure or would like to know more about your treatment options.
