As we arrive amid the summer season, activities such as swimming become a fantastic form of exercise and relaxation for many. But if you have an ostomy, you might wonder if it’s safe to dive in. The good news is that many people with ostomies enjoy swimming without issues. Here are five common questions from ostomates about swimming with an ostomy.

1. Is Swimming with an Ostomy Safe?

Before you take the plunge, it’s always a good idea to check with your local NSWOC (Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence), especially if you’re a new ostomate. If you’ve received the go-ahead and feel well enough for some gentle water activities, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the pool or ocean.

2. Is My Ostomy Pouch Waterproof?

While ostomy bags can handle water, you can add extra protection by covering the filter with the stickers that come with your bags to prevent water from entering. This simple step can keep your pouch dry and comfortable during your swim. If you don’t feel confident about the seal, try testing it in the bath before using it in the ocean or swimming pool.

3. Will My Ostomy Bag Fall Off?

Ostomy pouching systems are designed to withstand bathing, movement, and friction, so you can swim with your usual supplies. Ideally, change your pouch the night before to give the adhesive time to set properly. NSWOCs generally recommend allowing 12 hours between wafer application and contact with water to allow the wafer to adhere properly. If you’re trying a new pouching system, test it out during regular activities before swimming to ensure it stays secure. For additional security, you might consider using flange extenders and an ostomy belt. For advanced water sports, consult with an NSWOC for better pouching system recommendations.

4. How Can I Reduce Output While Swimming?

To minimize output during your swim, those with an ileostomy or an active colostomy can time their meals so they swim when their stoma is less active. Avoid gas-producing foods and ensure you stay hydrated with plenty of water or an oral rehydration solution.

5. How Do I Care for My Pouch After Swimming?

Your pouch might get wet, but it should maintain its seal. Simply pat it dry as you usually would. Bringing extra supplies with you is a smart idea, especially if you encounter any issues. Doubling up on supplies during your summer holidays can also be beneficial.

Swimming with an ostomy is entirely possible with the right preparation and supplies. Don’t let your ostomy hold you back from enjoying the water and making the most of your summer!
