Breast Reconstruction Options

Breast Reconstruction Options
Oct 22, 2020
After undergoing breast surgery, there are a few options to achieve symmetry, like using breast forms or getting reconstructive surgery. Check out our blog, Post-Mastectomy: How Do I Create Symmetry? if you are unsure of which option is right for you. In this blog, we will explore the options for reconstruction after breast surgery. There are two main categories of reconstruction:
  • Implant reconstruction - insertion of a silicone or saline implant
  • "Flap" reconstruction - using tissue from another part of your body to create the breast Some types of flap reconstructions are: -DIEP flap -Fat grafting -TRAM flap
So how do you decide between these options? Well, implants are an easier surgery and have a quicker recovery time than flaps. But flaps are less prone to problems and additional surgeries over time. Of course, your surgeon and particular situation also play major roles in this decision - because flap surgeries are more complex, they may not be offered at every hospital. Once you have decided that you want reconstructive surgery, talk to your doctor about your best options to suit your body.
