Urostomy

What is a Urostomy?

A urostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall to allow urine to bypass the bladder and exit the body. This is necessary when the bladder is not functioning properly or has been removed. The urine is collected in an external pouch or urostomy bag attached to the skin.

Reasons for a Urostomy

Urostomies are often performed due to:

  • Bladder Cancer: When the bladder is removed to treat cancer.
  • Neurogenic Bladder: Conditions affecting nerve control of the bladder, such as spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis.
  • Chronic Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Severe, recurrent infections that damage the bladder.
  • Congenital Conditions: Birth defects affecting the urinary system.
  • Trauma: Injuries to the bladder or urinary system

Types of Urostomies

  1. Ileal Conduit: The most common type, where a small piece of the ileum (part of the small intestine) is used to create a conduit for urine to exit the body through the stoma.
  2. Ureterostomy: Directly connects the ureters (tubes from the kidneys) to the stoma.
  3. Continent Urostomy: Uses a portion of the intestine to create a reservoir inside the body, with a valve that can be catheterized to empty urine.

Living with a Urostomy

Urostomy Care

  • Stoma Care: The stoma should be pink and moist. Keep the skin around it clean and dry to prevent irritation and infection.
  • Changing the Urostomy Bag: Typically done every 3-5 days, or as needed. Proper hygiene and careful handling are crucial to avoid leaks and skin problems.
  • Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids is important to keep urine diluted and reduce the risk of infections and blockages.

Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Clothing: Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Specialized urostomy-friendly clothing is available.
  • Physical Activity: Most activities are safe. Consult your doctor before starting new or strenuous activities.
  • Traveling: Plan ahead with extra supplies. Be aware of restroom facilities and carry a medical alert card.

Emotional and Psychological Support

Living with a urostomy can be emotionally challenging. It’s normal to feel anxious or depressed. Support groups, counseling, and talking to others with urostomies can provide comfort and practical advice.
