In Canada, if you receive ostomy surgery, you know that you will have access to supplies and accessories that you need to be able to live life to the fullest. However, people living in developing countries may not have the same experience. While ostomy surgeries are done across the globe, access to supplies can be difficult and expensive. Unfortunately, this leads to people taping household items like plastic bags and empty food containers to their bodies – which is not only not very safe or effective, but it does not protect the sensitive stoma area, which can lead to more problems.
Fortunately, there is an organization that is focused on delivering ostomy supplies to people in developing countries. Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada (FOWC) is a non-profit organization that distributes ostomy supplies to people in need all over the world. Their goal is to improve the quality of life of people with ostomies via supplies and education. For over 35 years, FOWC has collected and sent supplies – over 50,000 kg worth! – to local ostomy groups that redistribute the supplies to those in need. Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ecuador, India and Vietnam are among the 52 countries that have received supplies from FOWC. Delivering these critical supplies not only is more sanitary and effective, but it also gives these people their confidence back and allows them to pursue jobs and education.
