Colostomy

What is a Colostomy?

A colostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall. This allows waste to bypass a damaged or diseased part of the colon. The waste exits the body through the stoma and is collected in a colostomy bag attached to the skin. This is also known as a type of ostomy.

Reasons for a Colostomy

Colostomies are often performed due to:

  • Cancer: Colorectal cancer is a common reason, as part of the colon may need to be removed.
  • Diverticulitis: Severe cases with complications like perforation or abscess.
  • Trauma: Injuries to the abdomen or colon.
  • Congenital Conditions: Birth defects like imperforate anus or Hirschsprung’s disease.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Conditions like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

Types of Colostomies

  1. Temporary Colostomy: Created to allow the colon to heal after surgery or injury. It can often be reversed.
  2. Permanent Colostomy: Necessary when a section of the colon is removed and cannot be reconnected.

Living with a Colostomy

Colostomy Care

  • Stoma Care: The stoma should be pink and moist. It’s essential to keep the skin around it clean and dry to prevent irritation and infection.
  • Changing the Colostomy Bag: Typically done every 3-5 days, or as needed. Proper hygiene and careful handling are crucial to avoid leaks and skin problems.
  • Diet and Nutrition: Initially, a low-fiber diet is recommended to reduce the risk of blockage. Gradually, you can reintroduce fiber and other foods. It’s important to stay hydrated and avoid foods that cause gas or odor.

Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Clothing: Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Specialized colostomy-friendly clothing is available.
  • Physical Activity: Most activities are safe. Consult your doctor before starting new or strenuous activities.
  • Traveling: Plan ahead with extra supplies. Be aware of restroom facilities and carry a medical alert card

Emotional and Psychological Support

Living with a colostomy can be emotionally challenging. It’s normal to feel anxious or depressed. Support groups, counseling, and talking to others with colostomies can provide comfort and practical advice.
