As we continue into mid-August and the warm summer weather continues, there are some ostomy keys to keep in mind to ensure you can fully enjoy your summer. Here are some helpful tips and reminders for you!

Hydrate

As we discussed in a previous blog, staying hydrated is a very important key to combating the heat if you have an ostomy! Remember to drink fluids and replace electrolytes that you are losing in the warmer weather. On hot days, try to consume more fluids.

If You're Sweating...

Try ostomy underwear with a built in pouch to create a barrier between the pouching system and the skin. You may choose to use a fun fabric pouch to create a barrier between the skin and the pouching system. Another idea is to try using a more absorbent barrier for longer days. Finally, you may choose to use a barrier extender such as Sure Seal (be cautious as this traps moisture and may encourage a yeast infection).

Swimming

There are several swimsuit options available if you want to hide your pouching system. This is a personal decision and there is no "right way" to wear your pouching system in a swimsuit - it's completely up to you and what you feel comfortable with. For men, try pocketed swimsuits. For women, try a suit that gathers, multi-colored prints, and patterns, and a tankini style to allow for easy access to the pouching system when necessary. Change your pouch before swimming and if you feel self-conscious, try lying in a tub of water at home first to get used to the feeling. Hopefully this will boost your confidence!

Traveling

Although most people are refraining from travelling too far from home this summer, if you do choose to take a road trip or visit the family cabin, remember to take extra supplies - even triple the amount to be safe - as you may have trouble finding the products you need where you are. Remember you can always contact Nightingale if you are in a dilemma and we can try to assist by locating an NSWOC nurse or a product.

Things to Remember

Try to avoid leaving supplies in a warm car. This is because flanges/rings can heat up and melt which may impact the adhesiveness and effectiveness or wear time. Pro tip - to avoid this, try storing extra supplies in a small cooler with an ice pack when you are out.
