As we enter the second month of summer, we thought about the importance for ostomates to stay hydrated in the heat. Because ostomates are missing either parts of or the whole colon, fluids have a hard time getting absorbed into the body. Instead, they are constantly being flushed out. That is why it is so important for ostomates to drink plenty of water throughout the day - about 8 to10 ounces, as recommended by the United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA). As fluids are unable to get reabsorbed easily for ostomates, it is also common to lose electrolytes (like sodium and potassium) which help regulate body functions. There are lots of electrolyte-rich drinks which can help supplement. For example, drinks like Gatorade (remember to dilute with water to reduce the sugar content) can help, or try ReHydrate from Vancouver-based natural health product company, WithinUs.
Here are some symptoms of dehydration to watch for (whether you're an ostomate or not):
- headache
- fatigue
- dark or decreased urine
- dry mouth or skin
- feeling disoriented or unable to concentrate
- stomach cramps
